Media Release dated 22nd September 2006

Training Grant for Commonwealth Games Competitors

All potential members of the Jersey Team that will participate in the next Commonwealth Games due to be held in Delhi in October 2010, will have access to funds to assist them with their training programmes in the four year build-up to these Games.

This announcement was made to delegates attending the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey’s Council meeting last night. The Association’s President, Martin Hebden, presented to members a paper that outlined a process involving a very rigorous mechanism for reviewing requests from potential team members and for the distribution of money from a 100,000 US$ grant that has been provided by the Indian Government. This training grant, which was promised by the Delhi 2014 Bid Committee at the time of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s General Assembly in Jamaica in 2003 when Delhi were awarded the Games against strong opposition from Hamilton, Canada, is offered to all 71 Commonwealth Territories that will be represented at the next Games.

A sub-committee of the local association will be elected at the next Council Meeting in November 2006, and this committee will be responsible for reviewing applications of all those competitors that are supported by those affiliated member sports of the Association provided that they are eligible to compete for Jersey and that their sport is included in the Delhi 2010 Games programme. With Jersey’s largest team ever participating in the Melbourne Games last March including 35 competitors, it is anticipated that in excess of 60 local athletes will be applying for assistance from this fund.

Alan Cross, the Association’s Secretary feels confident that this source of funding will not only take some pressure off local athletes, the majority of whom are amateurs and receive no individual support from local sponsors, but also provide a higher profile for their performances in the period leading up to the 2010 Games. He emphasises that this grant is solely to assist with their training programmes and can not be used to defray the costs to the local Association in all its aspects of organisation in preparing for both the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, which will take place in Pune, near Mumbai, India and the main Games in Delhi in 2010. The local Association still relies heavily on the sponsorship of local companies and Alan is keen to hear from anybody that might consider being closely associated with Team Jersey over the next 4 year period.
