CGAJ Honorary Secretary

Name: Derek Ferguson

Derek was born in 1944 and began a career in Banking in 1960 in his home town of Cowdenbeath. In 1966 he transferred to the bank’s main London office before joining a major London Merchant Bank in 1969 and in 1980 transferred to Jersey to run the company’s Jersey Investment Management operations. He retired in 2000 having also had responsibility for the operations in Luxembourg, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. He married Alice in 1967 and has a daughter Yvonne and a son Graeme both of whom are married with children and living in Jersey. Both are heavily involved in the activities of the island, his daughter with Girl Guides and his son with a whole variety of sports.

In his younger days Derek’s main sport was football but also played golf, badminton and squash and watched many other sports avidly. On coming to Jersey, Derek wanted to put something back into his favoured sport and became a football referee which he undertook for some 8 years. His main sport today is lawn bowls which he took up in 1997. He has been Secretary and President of Bowls Jersey and Club Captain and President of his club St Saviour’s B C. At the Melbourne Games he acted as Assistant Team Manager for the Men’s Bowls Team and at the Delhi Games was Manager of the Men’s Bowls Team.

Derek has been Bowls Jersey’s delegate to the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey since 2000 and in 2003 chaired the sub-committee which reviewed the Association’s Constitution. He was on the Validation Committee for the Melbourne Games and the Grants Committee for the Delhi Games.

Derek was elected Secretary General of the Association in April 2011 and looks forward to working with all the sports in the lead up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Derek hopes that he will still have time away from administrative duties to play some bowls during the summer months.
