Media Release - 12th September 2008Sanne Group steps in as lead Youth Games sponsors. The Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey is extremely pleased to announce that a local company has come forward as the lead sponsor for its Youth Team due to leave Jersey for Pune, near Mumbai, India on Tuesday 7th October 2008 to compete in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games. Sanne Group, an international trust company based in Jersey, have signed up as lead sponsors after they found out that Team Jersey required a sponsor for the Games. Simon Young, Managing Director of Sanne Group said “When we heard that the Jersey team might have to participate in the Games without the funding they deserved we wanted to do everything possible to help. Encouraging young people to excel is an important ethos for Sanne Group and this opportunity provides them with a supreme challenge. The 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games - Pune, India. - Information Sheet. VENUE: Pune, the 7th largest city in India is located in the western Indian DATES: 12th to 18th October 2007. AGE GROUP: All competitors must be 18 or under during the year of the Youth Games. PROGRAMME OF SPORTS: The following nine sports are included in the programme -: It is understand that, for the first time in a Commonwealth Youth Games, all 71 Commonwealth territories are expected to be represented so competition is expected to be pretty fierce. The 2008 Pune Youth Games website is -: www.cygpune2008.com/sports-venue TEAM JERSEY - Due to the restrictions on the size of a Commonwealth Youth Games i.e. normally 1000 competitors representing 6 sports, Jersey has been allocated places for only 12 athletes. This allocation is made on the basis of the size of Team Jersey at the 2006 Melbourne Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation, the governing body for all Commonwealth Games events, agreed to increase the size of the Pune Games to 1300 athletes covering 9 sports. Three local sports associations i.e. athletics, swimming and tennis will be represented in Team Jersey at these Games. The attached media release (dated 8th August 2008) provided the Jersey public with the names of the 4 team members selected in each of the 3 sports plus the names of all supporting officials. The media release failed to mention that the Association’s President, Martin Hebden, and his wife would also be attending the Youth Games. OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST. Jersey entered a team of 8 competitors in the 2nd Commonwealth Youth Games which was held in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 2004. On that occasion we participated in athletics, cycling and swimming. Although all members of the Team competed with integrity and well justified their selection, there were two outstanding performances by Daniel Halksworth (gold and silver medals in swimming) and Lauren Therin (two bronze medals in athletics) Alan Cross
