TRAINING DAY FOR COMMONWEALTH GAMES HOPEFULS
The first of two training days for potential competitors and officials for Team Jersey for the XIXth Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi next October, took place at the L’Horizon Hotel last Sunday. The full day’s programme involving 50 participants from 8 sports and was opened by the President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey, Martin Hebden. As this was the first time the competitors have met as one team the aims of the day were to foster a sense of team spirit and share key information on Games protocol. Paul Huddlestone, the General Team Manager, then introduced the chairman for the day, Dr. Jeremy Cross, the Team’s sports psychologist. Before introducing other lead speakers, Jeremy led introductory sessions to help people to get to know each other and to develop a shared ‘Team Jersey Charter’. There then followed a presentation on ‘Security Issues in Delhi’ by two visiting Athlete Liaison Officers from the UK Metropolitan Police. After lunch participants were treated to informative session on ‘Drug awareness and testing’. This was presented by Judith Ford from the UK Anti Doping Unit and particularly well received by the audience.
The day’s programme finished with group sessions including medical issues (led by Team Doctors Carl Clinton and Adam Garnett; cultural awareness (led by Airtel representatives); Delhi orientation (Paul Huddlestone, the General Team Manager); sports psychology (Dr. Jeremy Cross) and the all important team kit measurements. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to all the lead contributors and comments from the floor that, as a result of the presentations, members were beginning to get to know each other and gel as a Team and that the programme had helped both athletes and officials to be more focussed on the forthcoming Games.
The final Team will be announced shortly after 16th July which is the deadline date for receiving nominations from athletes for consideration for selection for Team Jersey. The second training day is scheduled for Sunday 29th August to fine-tune the team’s preparations for what Mr. Hebden described as “the best supported Team Jersey we have ever had”.
