Media Release - 19th April 2009

The Easter 2009 Sports Conference organised by the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey.

There were over 60 local ‘elite’ sports people at the Jersey Commonwealth Games Association’s one day “Sports Performance” Conference held last Saturday at Haute Vallee School. Sports represented were archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, lawn bowls, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis and triathlon.

Delegates were divided into 3 groups with each enjoying 3 one and a quarter hour interactive and challenging presentations on “ goal setting”, “ mental preparation”, and “lifestyle management.”
The guest speakers included Dr. Jeremy Cross (locally known tennis player and sports psychologist) Dr. Jenny Denyer (former World No.8 and England squash player) and Dr. Alison Mowbray (former member of the British Rowing Team for 7 years and Athens Olympic Silver Medallist in the Quad Skull Rowing event). All 3 speakers work for Lane4 Management Group in Bourne End, Bucks and they questioned the participants on aspects such as their short/long term planning and goal setting within their given sport. As always with these events, it was encouraging and exciting to see athletes from so many diverse sports working alongside each other.

The programme, involving some of the Island’s best sportsmen and women, formed part of an on-going support programme currently being organised on behalf of the CGAJ by Paul Du Feu (Assistant General Team Manager for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games) for potential team members for the next Commonwealth Games. Invitations to this particular event were also extended to potential Aland 2009 Island Games competitors.

The CGA J was delighted to welcome Derek de la Haye form the States of Jersey Education, Sport, and Culture Department as well as Andrew Goodyear from the Association’s lead sponsor – the Sanne Group. The CGAJ would like to thanks the staff of the Haute Vallee School for all their help in making the day a success.
