BadmintonThe Jersey Badminton Association was founded in 1924 and has approximately 240 members - both juniors and seniors. The JBA is based at the New Gilson Hall, La Pouquelaye - a magnificent purpose-built 5 court hall, built to host the 1997 Island Games - and the envy of many a visiting player. Numerous clubs play at the Gilson Hall, and the JBA runs an evening league throughout the season, consisting of mens, ladies and mixed doubles. The JBA also organises various tournaments including the Jersey Open, which attracts top county players from the UK. Jersey has competed in every Island Games since their inception in 1985, and has run a County team competing in the Badminton Association of England's County League since 1987. Juniors are well catered for as well, with coaching available from beginners upwards. In 2004 the JBA started their own Academy, offering some of the Island's top juniors in the 12-16 age bracket dedicated coaching from experienced coaches and players, with one of the aims being to develop them into future senior island players. In the last few years Jersey has produced several junior English national champions, namely Elizabeth Cann, Danielle Le Feuvre and Mariana Agathangelou. All three represented England at junior level, culminating with Elizabeth playing for England at full senior level. |
