Qualifying Standards

Overview
The tournament structure in England is such that they are split into four categories. The English National rankings are then prepared each month based on results in the previous 12 calendar months. The total points achieved are then divided by 8. Therefore in order to achieve a ‘fair’ ranking you need to play a minimum of 8 tournaments in the calendar year.
Separate rankings are prepared for Mens and Ladies Singles, Mens and Ladies Doubles, and Mens and Ladies Mixed doubles.
The four standards of tournaments are: The English Nationals which occur once a year and are the pinicle of the English tournament circuit, the Elite circuit, the Challenger circuit, and the Satellite circuit. Points are awarded based on the level of tournament and the progression through the rounds at each tournament.

Achieving an English Ranking
In order to achieve a placing in the English senior rankings, a player must compete in the B A of E Grand Slams, Open Tournaments and/or the B A of E National Championships. Points are achieved on a sliding scale as to the round the player is eliminated. All points are totalled to give a ranking.
To achieve a world ranking
You need to compete in tournaments outside England.

The Opposition
If a player enters a B A of E Grand Slam tournament and these are restricted to 16 ladies singles, 24 mens singles and 16 doubles and mixed pairs would be playing against the best in England. The standard is very high and this is reflected by the points earned according to the round reached.
If playing in world ranking tournaments the standard of opposition could be the best in the world downwards.
The English Team
A player selected by the B A of E to represent England at the Commonwealth Games will probably be chosen from the top 10 of the UK senior rankings of the discipline they are selected to play in the team event.
Going to the Commonwealth Games
The achievement of being ranked in the top 20 for ladies or 40 for men in the English rankings is a good assessment of what a Jersey player would require to attend the Commonwealth Games. A player ranked in the top 20/40 players in England can expect to be competitive in the Commonwealth Games tournament.
Note - On ranking list for ladies doubles, the ranking list is done per person i.e. if player was 20th as a pair in the women’s it would show as being at 40th position on the ranking list and 40th as a pair in the men’s, it would show as being at 80th position on the ranking list.
Further Consideration
England won Gold in the previous Commonwealth Games team event, Gold in the mixed individual tournament and Bronze in the ladies singles individual tournament. On this basis, players ranked 20 in the ladies events and 40 in the mens events would not be there to make up the numbers but would provide very real competition to other players. From the 19 teams that competed in the last Commonwealth Games, Jersey ‘s final ranking was between 9th and 12th position.
Team/Individual Selection
Players must qualify in one event i.e. singles, doubles or mixed. Qualified players may play in any of the individual events and the team event, providing a sufficient number of players qualify to make up a team. A team can be from two to seven ladies and two to seven men.
