Qualifying Standards

JCA Qualifying Standards for Commonwealth Games

At the JCA Committee Meeting on Wednesday 3rd December it was resolved that the following standards be submitted to the Jersey Commonwealth Games Association as the qualifying standards for cycling for the 2010 games in Delhi. It is noted that Mountain Biking is not included in the 2010 Games.

The expectation of Commonwealth Games events is that they are of a high standard. Other nations such as England will send riders who are at an Elite level regularly competing internationally in UCI mandated events.

The JCA are of the view that any rider(s) representing Jersey should have experience of racing at a high level preferably National Championship or higher. However, the logistical difficulties are recognised and it is thought appropriate to offer a number of realistic alternatives as a route to achieving qualifying standards.

The standards proposed by the Jersey Cycling Association for the Commonwealth Games are:

Road (Road Race & Time Trial)

Following an appraisal of the 2009 Road Race Calendar and the entry criteria set by British Cycling the Road Race standards have been amended to those shown below.

The changes recognise the significant increase in the quality of fields particularly in the Mens Premier Calendar events. They also recognise the difficulties faced by lone riders in what are essentially team events and the general vagaries of road racing – mechanicals, punctures, crashes etc.

Mens Road Race

  • Top twenty finish in BCF National Road Race Championship
  • Top three finish in BCF Divisional Road Race Championship
  • Top twenty finish in a Premier Calendar event
  • Not less than 3 finishes in 6th place or better in National ‘B’ Road Race Event (at a minimum distance of 120 kilometres and not being on the same day as a Premier Calendar event)

Womens Road Race

  • Top ten finish in the Ladies National Championship
  • Top six finish in the WCRA Championship
  • Top ten finish in a Team Series event
  • Not less than 3 finishes in 6th place or better in National ‘B’ events (not being on the same day as a Team Series event)

All of the above events must be held under BC/UCI rules with all results officially recorded.

The selection committee will also (if requested) consider performances in comparable races in France, Belgium & elsewhere. Competitors are advised to discuss participation in these events in advance with the Team Manager.

Mens Time Trial

Requirement to attain one of the following in the year 2009/10

  • Finish in the overall top ten of the CTT Time Trial Series (Rudy Project Series)
  • Finish within 110% of the winning time in the CTT 25 mile National Championship
  • Finish within 110% of the winning time in the CTT 50 mile National Championship
  • Finish within 110% of the winning time in the BTTC

Womens Time Trial

  • As for Men

Mens & Womens Track Standards

Requirement to attain one of the following in the year 2009

For your chosen event, attain a time equivalent to 8th place in the previous Commonwealth Games
Men: attain a top 8 place in the British National Championship Points Race
Women: attain a top 6 place in the British National Championship Points Race

Mountain Bike Standards

To enable and encourage competitors to race in a variety of events MTB competitors are to accumulate no less than 60 British Cycling points in the season prior to the Games. This means achieving three or more 24th place finishes in National Championships or three or more 21st place finishes in National series events. The points system is international and equivalent events in France and elsewhere would therefore count.

Note: The points system is maintained by British Cycling – points attained in UK based events are automatically credited to a riders account. Points attained in non BC sanctioned events must be reported to BC by the rider. BC will then verify the achievement and update the riders account.
